This week's top recruiting stories:
What to Say to the Candidates You Don’t Hire
So you’ve just wrapped up a week of interviewing candidates for an opening in your department, and on Friday afternoon you reconvene with the rest of the interview committee to swap notes. The good news is there’s a clear front-runner, and you’re all excited to make this person an offer. The bad? There were a couple of other candidates you liked, but who just weren’t quite the right fit. And next week, you’ll have to both let them down gently, and field their “Can you give me any feedback on why I didn’t get the job?” requests.
The 2 Traits Managers Want In Their Next Hire
A new survey by job search engine CareerBuilder looks at what traits hiring managers value most when choosing between two equally qualified candidates. Surprisingly, the survey found an applicant’s sense of humor is most important, with 27 percent of the 2,076 hiring managers surveyed reporting it was the top factor they looked at beyond the resume. The second and third top qualities hiring managers said they seek are an applicant's community involvement (26 percent) and how well he or she dressed (22 percent).
How to Use Psychometric Testing in Hiring
Roughly 18% of companies currently use personality tests in the hiring process, according to a survey conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management. This number is growing at a rate of 10-15% a year according to many industrial and organizational psychologists, as well as the Association for Test Publishers.
Harris Poll Finds that Indeed is Top Job Search Brand
Harris Interactive recently announced that Indeed has received the Brand of the Year Award in the Online Job Search category, ranking #1 ahead of CareerBuilder and Monster. We’re proud to be recognized among top brands such as Amazon, Target and Toyota, all leaders in their respective categories.
Do You Use Phone Interviews to Screen?
Companies that are growing quickly invest a lot of staff time in interviewing and selecting the right candidates for their jobs. Participative companies like to hold small group interviews in which four or five employees meet with each candidate in the first round interview.
Resume Mistakes That Will Make You Go ‘WHOA!’
Creativity is typically perceived to be a positive trait among job seekers – that is, until someone takes the liberty of submitting a music video in lieu of a resume. For those looking to choose this route, might we at least suggest you don’t use a wrecking ball as a prop – or lick a sledgehammer or tool of any kind.

Roundup: This Week's Top Recruiting Stories From Around The Web
Recruiting Roundup: This week new ways you can use Twitter's improved search tools, the new trend in discrimination, how important the candidate experience is and more...
New Ways to Recruit & Hire Using Twitter’s Improved Platform
On a busy day, Twitter sees about 175 million tweets and about 300,000 new visitors on a daily basis. With numbers like these you’d be out of your mind not to consider Twitter as a viable source for recruiting and sourcing candidates. In recent years Twitter has boosted it’s search functions to make the job of a recruiter easier. With over 750 tweets being shared on Twitter each second, it’s important to be at the forefront of the trends in recruitment and maybe even more so for employment branding.
Screening lean: Getting to the bottom of that resume pile
While applicant-tracking technology has definitely helped to streamline the recruiting process, it hasn’t cut down on the sheer number of candidates that are applying for jobs. If anything, technology may be responsible for increasing the volume of applicants: it’s faster to submit a resume online rather than print one out, put it in an envelope and post it in the mail. This, combined with a challenging job market, has HR professionals and hiring managers struggling to sift through hundreds of resumes per advertised position, in addition to all of the other responsibilities that fall under their realm.
New York City Bans Unemployment Discrimination #2013HRtrend
The New York City Council passed a bill Wednesday that would ban businesses from discriminating against unemployed job applicants. The measure would stop employers from considering an applicant's employment status and also prohibit job ads that specify applicants must be currently employed. According to its sponsors, it will help the long-term jobless get back to work.
Compliance with New EEOC Guidelines Can Help You Improve Quality of Hires
In early 2012, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Office of Legal Counsel issued updated guidance regarding the handling of criminal history checks in the course of background screening. Furthermore, the EEOC has announced it will aggressively pursue, as class actions, claims of discrimination that arise as a result of criminal history checks. Although the 2012 guidance clarifies long-standing EEOC policies, it is particularly involved — and initially can be confusing for HR professionals and recruiters, alike.
Dear Candidate 5a26jd7: Your Application Is Very Important to Us
The recruiting buzzwords circle in our brains: candidate experience, employer of choice, culture, employment branding, talent pools, talent communities, candidate relationships, etc. Your expensive and time-consuming investments in all of these things won’t be worth it the technology is used wrong. Candidates will sour on you or abandon the process. They’ll self-select out for reasons having nothing to do with aptitude or job-related qualifications.
Returnships: Internships for a New Generation
Need Skilled Workers? Consider a Returnship Program. It’s a common story these days: companies can’t find the qualified candidates they need, despite the high unemployment rate. But some employers are solving this dilemma through what are known as returnship programs. Returnships, or return-to-work programs, are commonly described as internship programs for older professionals who have been out of the workforce for an extended period of time. In many cases, they are designed to help these individuals refresh their skill sets, learn new technologies and ease back into the corporate world.
