Recruiting Roundup: This week employers are holding out for perfection in hiring, 5 recruiting skills you need, how to pick the best candidate and more...
I’ll Say It Again: We Need to Get Rid of Resumes and Job Descriptions
As some of you may know, I think the continued use of traditional, skills-infested job descriptions prevents companies from hiring the best talent available. By default, they wind up hiring the best person who applies. That’s the same reason I’m against the indiscriminate use of assessment tests. While these tests are good confirming indicators of on-the-job performance, they’re poor predictors of it (square the correlation coefficient to get a sense of any test’s predictive value).
With Positions to Fill, Employers Wait for Perfection
American employers have a variety of job vacancies, piles of cash and countless well-qualified candidates. But despite a slowly improving economy, many companies remain reluctant to actually hire, stringing job applicants along for weeks or months before they make a decision. If they ever do.
Don’t Forget These 5 Recruiting Skills in the Social Recruiting Fervor
Recruiting, as many of us know it, has undergone a transformation in the last few years. In fact, there are recruiters coming in to the workforce now who only source within LinkedIn Recruiter, or who’ve never had to keep a physical (read: paper) file on a candidate.
Candidate Experience: Can You Keep Them Out of the “Black Hole?”
A couple of months ago I shared some data from an Aberdeen Group report about benchmarking quality of hire best practices. It’s a great benchmark list of outcomes. But how about the inputs? More specifically, in terms of quality of hire, how about benchmarking the quality of the candidate experience? Call me crazy, but it seems to me that a higher quality candidate experience translates into a higher quality of hire.
You Have Identified the Candidates. How Do You Pick the Right One?
In my last two posts, I talked about the process we use at H.Bloom to run a recruiting campaign: defining the role, targeting the right profile of candidates, building a list of potential candidates and presenting them with a persuasive pitch. This process is meant to yield viable candidates for a position. But what happens then? Once you have interested candidates, how do you figure out which one is the right one for your team? The answer depends on two things: The person’s fit for the role. And the person’s fit for the team.

Roundup: This Week's Top Recruiting Stories From Around The Web
Recruiting Roundup: This week video is on the rise in recruiting, and interviewing, Indeed.com announce 100 million visitors used their site in January to look for jobs
and more...
How 100 million unique visitors use Indeed to find jobs
We created Indeed to help as many people as possible find jobs. In January, over 100 million unique visitors came to the site to do just that! Indeed is the starting point for more job searches and the source of more hires than any other site. Last month alone, visitors to the Indeed network performed over 3 billion searches, more than 1,000 searches every second. People use Indeed to search for jobs in over 50 countries and in 26 languages. Traffic continues to grow worldwide, with the most rapid growth occurring in Russia, Japan, South Africa, Australia and India.
Do You Post Salary in Job Postings?
Do you put the salary for the job in your job postings, either your online job postings or in other venues? This debate about putting salary in job postings becomes more important as job applicants are willing to settle just to have a job. This could cause retention chaos as jobs become more available or motivation damage for people who are under-employed, under-utilized, and bored.
You Don’t Know It, But Women See Gender Bias in Your Job Postings
Are a few gender-themed words in your job descriptions signaling women, unconsciously, to not apply? A scientific study of 4,000 job descriptions revealed that a lack of gender-inclusive wording caused significant implications for recruiting professionals tasked to recruit women to hard-to-fill positions underrepresented by women.
Why Video? 6 Benefits of Making Video Part of Your Recruitment Mix
Not only is video a dominant form of communication; it is proven to be influential, as well. Consumers are not just viewing content, but absorbing it, and letting themselves be swayed by it. When it comes to recruiting, potential and current employees are the customer, and the companies they choose to work for are the products they invest in.
Seventy-Five Percent of Job Applicants Do Not Hear Back From Employers
Job hunting can be a frustrating process especially if you have no idea whether the employer made a decision or even saw your application. The vast majority (75 percent) of workers who applied to jobs using various resources in the last year said they never heard back from the employer, according to a nationwide CareerBuilder survey.
63 Percent of Companies Use Video Interviews
A new OfficeTeam survey has revealed that 63 percent of HR managers said their company often uses video technology to conduct employment interviews. This is a stratospheric jump from 2011 when just 14 percent reported the same. Over the next three years, 13 percent of respondents said their organizations would more aggressively pursue video interviews while 85 percent predict the number of video interviews to remain the same.

Roundup: This Week's Top Recruiting Stories From Around The Web
Recruiting Roundup: This week a six things you should include in every job description, streamlining the interview process, how to interview interns
and more...
12 Tricky Interview Questions For Interns
Internship seekers should prepare for common interview questions like “What are your strengths,” or “What are your weaknesses,” but they can also expect less conventional queries.
What Do You Want In An Applicant Tracking System?
At CMS we speak with employers every day who are looking to make a change to their recruiting and applicant tracking system. With budgets in place for the new year, we see a lot of volume and a lot of questions at the beginning of the year.
3 Out of 4 Hires Fail: How to Beat the Odds
The Hall-of-Famer Ted Williams famously said baseball is “the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of 10 and be considered a good performer.” Maybe not the only one: The same could be said for hiring.
Six Things You Need in Every Job Description
Your job description is a sales pitch for your company and the position. Writing an effective job description is essential to attract the right applicants, and can cut your time to hire by attracting more qualified applicants to the position.
Streamlining the Interview Process
Many recruiters have experienced the knock-down drag-out fighting of going through many rounds of in-person interviews. The main problem with having rounds upon rounds of these interviews is that new information about the candidate is rarely uncovered. Plus, the individuals involved in the interview process are taken away from their jobs to conduct these time-consuming interviews.
These 5 Trends Are Shaping the Future of Pre-hire Assessments
2013 is going to present the start of a major tipping point in the way people find and are evaluated for jobs (and vice versa), and a blend of technology and assessment content will play a big role in these ongoing changes.
